Thoughts 1
My favourite aspect of any piece of media, whether it be stories, film, music or art, is character development. If there ceases to be any character development, if there are no consequences or changes in a character proceeding their past actions, I don't want to experience it. For example, I enjoy television shows like Amphibia, Gravity Falls, Home Movies and the Regular Show because I am not only entertained by the storytelling and dialogue, but also because I care about the characters and what will happen to them next. If a character is the same in every instance, why should I care, I know what will happen to them next; these characters are simply unnatural, and although realism is not at all a core aspect of media, consequences and change are fundamental aspects of storytelling. Even sitcoms such as the Simpsons have loose character development which can suffice. When I was a baby, I watched shows because of cool colours and pictures (like Pocoyo), but as I grew, I was introduced to Cartoon Network - and in my opinion - one of the last golden ages of network television. Today, I see my cousins watch Cocomelon and Paw Patrol, and it sickens me, because nothing matters. These shows are the epitome of nihilism. I could go to Adventure Bay, murder every single human in a public display, and it won't matter. They are not characters, they are images. One note, never changing. Tomorrow they will just come back anyway. What annoys me most however, is the people behind these cancerous shows. Writing is one of the most important factors of any piece of media, and good writing is hard; so instead, lets just write plain stories that kids will eat up so we can sell them merchandise till the end of time. When a show ends, it is for one of two reasons: because it is done telling its story, or because it runs out of money. It is a relief when something ends on the former, as it shows intention being rewarded. A plan made to create an experience that could enchant audiences and leave them wanting nothing more. Actually, I do want to see more Amphibia, but I don't need it, we don't need any more, it's done. It's that one quote, you either die a hero or live long enough to become a soulless corporate monopoly. The Simpsons fell down this trap, but I still watch seasons 1-8 because they contain the characters I love. You could remove every other episode from the Simpsons and I would not care; for me, Homer's Enemy was the finale to one of the greatest episodic comedies of all time. Damned impudence, I bet you can tell I am peeved. In conclusion, boycott crap media because we deserve better. If you are a parent, do not let your kids watch mind-numbing rubbish just because it makes it easier to parent. Do not sacrifice your child's future for your short-term needs. Show them good content that tells good stories, or even better, play with them, and let them be the protagonist of their own exciting story. Let them develop themselves and grow, and don't fill them with the belief that the world is safe and pure. It's not, and the quicker you tell them, the better.
Subversive 90s counter-culture - yes I want fries with that.
